I used to collect Hard Rock Cafe t-shirts from every city, mainly because of the city’s name printed on every shirt. They were my favorite travel memorabilia for many years. When I visited my friend in Israel, I asked him to take me to a Hard Rock Cafe for dinner on the night I arrived. He lived in Rishon LeZion, about 20 minutes from Tel Aviv. He was perturbed at the idea of going to an American restaurant, instead of us trying one of the acclaimed local Israeli restaurants in the city. I told him, without a hint of embarrassment, that I wanted to go there because I needed a T-shirt. Of course I didn’t always eat at every Hard Rock. In later years, I just bought the shirts and left.

Looking back, I now cringe at my shallowness. But because I was still young and naive then, I can put the blame on my age, rather than my lack of sophistication. Dozens of unworn Hard Rock shirts later, I eventually stopped collecting them. What was I thinking? I didn’t even like wearing T-shirts in the first place! I also realized I’ve missed out on all the great local restaurants whenever I went to eat at Hard Rock Cafe. Clearly FOMO wasn’t yet a “word” I was familiar with back then. ๐

After years of hiatus from collecting travel souvenirs, I once again resumed the habit of collecting travel memorabilia. But I wanted something that was more useful and meaningful. And these souvenirs gathered more praises from everyone.
Welcome to my collection of mugs from Starbucks!
Although I still kept my annoying habit of going out of my way, searching for a Starbucks wherever I go. Like the time my mom and I went on a tour to Eastern Europe, I had to ask every local guide if they had a Starbucks. To my disappointment, they didn’t have it yet in Budapest or Slovakia back then. The people in our tour group soon learned about my strange obsession with Starbucks (after the many times they heard me ask in desperation). When the guide in Prague informed me there was a Starbucks in the city, everyone in the group clapped and cheered, “hooray, finally a Starbucks for Boots!” My mom and I immediately broke away from the tour and walked for fifteen minutes towards the only Starbucks in the city. When I got there, I almost went on a coma….I was told they didn’t sell the mugs! I stood there in disbelief, paralyzed from head to toe ๐. I wanted to cry and throw a tantrum inside the store, hoping the workers will take a pity and miraculously find me a ‘Prague’ or a ‘Czech Republic’ mug. To compensate my heartbreak, I bought two mugs when we arrived in Vienna. I heard they now have Starbucks in almost every city in Eastern Europe

Recently the United States has started improving its relations with Cuba. Everyone I’ve spoken to about Cuba told me I better visit it soon because it is still frozen in time. God forbid, once the doors open up, American chains will start to infiltrate the country. McDonald’s, TGI Friday’s, KFC, and others will shamelessly come and ruin Cuba with over-commercialization. I agree…..they should forbid all those awful restaurant chains from entering. Although I am fine with allowing only oneโjust one! Because seriously, I must have….I got to have….can’t live without….well, okay, it would be really nice to add a Starbucks Havana mug to my collection. ๐

With all the mugs, I can’t decide which is my favorite. Every city or country has an interesting design. But one thing is for sure, each has given me so much pleasure. Whenever I make myself a cup of tea, I instinctively look at which city I’m using and in my solitude, I quietly sit in our kitchen table, reminisce the memories I had there. It doesn’t only bring me back to that place, but it gives me a few minutes each morning to escape from my mundane life in the suburbs. With that, I gleefully say, “thank you, Starbucks!”
Actually this New York mug may be my favorite because of the embossed design. It is different from all the others.
Update: as of July 2020, we now have 70 mugs and counting!
I try and collect magnets but now I have an intergrated fridge I can’t! I like the idea of the mugs! Think the New York one is my favourite too!

That’s one thing I definitely should do in my next travel, Boots. See, I used to think pictures would be enough memorabilia for the places I’ve been to. You changed my perspective now.
That part where you point out that you are remembering the cities or countries you’ve been to while using the mug in your morning cup of coffee is just riveting. I will think of something like that soon.
About your t-shirt collection, well, everyone has his or her late realizations. The good thing is you are able to learn something from it. T-shirt would be perfectly fine for me on the contrary. I’m addicted to fitted t-shirts. How subjective, huh?
I would love to pick that mug from Boston given the chance…

I’m glad I changed your perspectives. I used to think pictures were enough but not all the time we can bring out our stacks of photos of scrapbooks to remind us about the places we’ve been to. My mugs give me that pleasure. And regarding t-shirts, men wear them all the time. You could actually collect them and won’t go to waste ๐. I don’t wear a lot of t-shirts and looking at them piled high in my closet, I feel they’re taking up space for my cute tops etc. (hehe)

I’m also crazy about mugs but not starbuck mugs, just mugs in general. I’ve never had enough. I was away from blogging for a while. I’m glad you are back and I hope your son is felling better at the moment and that your family is coping well.

I actually cringed when you mentioned Hard Rock shirts but yeah, I guess we can blame it on the age. :p Those were the days…. I remember when I was in Venice for a business trip, one of the guys suggested we go to Hard Rock for a nightout and I was like “WTF is wrong with you? We’re in Venice for crying out loud!” I don’t have much respect for people who travels all the miles and then prefer to eat in Mc Donald’s or Hard Rock. It just doesn’t make sense to me.
Loving your new collection though, I know someone who has a bookcase just for his Starbucks mugs. He doesn’t use it, just to display it.
I used to collect fridge magnets (ahhh the joys of penniless travels) but got tired of it. Now I just take a selfie and buy a photo frame from the place it was taken from so I can put the photo in it.
I’m still not very happy with it though… We’ll see. :p

Oh no not in Venice!! I remember all the wonderful meals I had there. It would be a shame to eat at a familiar place like McD’s ๐
Wow -a bookcase just for Starbucks mugs! That’s something I’d love to see. I use my mugs often because it truly gives me joy to use them ๐
Thanks for dropping by! I love your blog.
